Strings · Australian Christian Orchestra
For Christian cellists in Sydney wanting to play sacred and classical repertoire in community.
Your place in the strings
The cello at AChA
Cellos anchor the orchestra — the bass line, the tenor melodies, and some of the most moving solo moments in the sacred repertoire. In the Australian Christian Orchestra the cello section is a close-knit group that carries real emotional weight in worship settings.
Auditioning as a cellist
We look for Grade 7+ AMEB (or equivalent). A short video — a Bach suite movement, a study, or a worship arrangement — is the easiest way in. Strong rhythm and a warm tone go a long way.
Cellist questions
Do I need to bring my own cello to rehearsals?
Yes — members provide their own instrument. Rehearsals are at Scots Church in the Sydney CBD, with parking and public transport close by.
Is there solo or principal opportunity?
Yes. Principal and solo lines are shared across the section depending on the season's programme.
